February 3, 2025 – Young Worker Leadership Academy: Empowering High School Students with Workplace Safety and Leadership Training
Academy Scheduled for February 20-22, 2025
The Commission on Health and Safety and Workers’ Compensation (CHSWC) has announced that the California Young Worker Leadership Academy (YWLA) will take place at UC Berkeley from February 20 to February 22, 2025. This three-day event provides high school students with hands-on leadership training focused on workplace safety, employee rights, and responsibilities.
What Students Will Gain from YWLA
The Young Worker Leadership Academy aims to:
- Educate students on workplace health and safety regulations.
- Equip participants with the tools to advocate for safer workplaces in their communities, especially during Safe Jobs for Youth Month in May.
- Develop a network of young leaders dedicated to promoting worker safety and injury prevention.
- Train students to implement action plans that drive positive change in their schools and workplaces.
The academy will include interactive workshops where students will collaborate, explore real-world safety issues, and develop practical solutions.
Who Organizes the Academy?
YWLA is a joint initiative of UC Berkeley’s Labor Occupational Health Program (LOHP) and UCLA’s Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) program. It is part of California’s Worker Occupational Safety and Health Training and Education Program (WOSHTEP), which CHSWC administers under the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR).
The 2025 academy marks the 21st year of this leadership initiative, with additional sponsorship from the James Irvine Foundation, UCLA LOSH, and UC Berkeley LOHP.
Why This Matters for Workplace Safety
CHSWC continues to evaluate and improve California’s workers’ compensation and workplace safety systems. By training young leaders, the commission ensures future generations understand their rights and can champion safer workplaces.
