March 19, 2025 – Sacramento, CA – Support Fire Recovery Efforts: The Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) announced a $25 million investment in the California Workplace Outreach Project (CWOP). This project supports worker safety and educates employees about their rights. In addition, it aids fire recovery efforts across the state.
Empowering Workers Through Outreach
Support Fire Recovery Efforts: California funds 89 community-based organizations (CBOs) through CWOP. In Los Angeles, 21 CBOs receive nearly $6 million. This money will help workers learn about health, safety, and wage theft protections. Moreover, it supports those involved in fire cleanup and rebuilding.
California Labor Secretary Stewart Knox stated that the state uses trusted local messengers to deliver essential information directly to workers. Similarly, DIR Director Katie Hagen noted that CWOP bridges the gap between available services and those in need.
Targeting High-Risk Industries and Vulnerable Communities
CWOP focuses on high-risk industries such as construction and fire debris removal. Additionally, it targets vulnerable workers in communities that suffered recent fires. A recent report shows that Latino workers form 36% of the affected workforce in Los Angeles and 84% of construction workers in the area. Thus, CWOP provides services in Spanish and other languages to ensure broad access.
About CWOP and Future Funding
CWOP partners with CBOs to share vital information on labor rights and workplace safety. A UC Berkeley Possibility Lab study found that trusted messengers improve outreach effectiveness. Today’s announcement marks the first phase of a two-year funding cycle that will eventually total about $49 million.
