Amazon Driver Sentenced in Staged Robbery and False Injury Claim
STOCKTON, CA — The San Joaquin County DA Office has secured a felony conviction in a workers’ compensation fraud case. This conviction highlights the DA’s ongoing commitment to exposing fraud and protecting the county’s economic integrity.
Amazon Driver Staged Robbery to Justify Fraudulent Claim
Stacy Johnson, an Amazon delivery driver, pleaded guilty to two felony charges: grand theft (PC 487) and insurance fraud (PC 550(b)(3)). As a result, he received a sentence of four months in county jail and two years of felony probation. Additionally, he must pay $3,000 in investigative restitution and $2,000 to Amazon to cover the cost of stolen goods.
According to prosecutors, Johnson worked with accomplices to stage a fake robbery of his Amazon delivery truck. Immediately afterward, he filed a false workers’ compensation claim, citing psychological injuries and stress. If successful, the fraud would have cost the system $35,000—a burden that typically gets passed down to consumers and businesses.
DA Freitas: “Fraud Impacts Everyone”
District Attorney Ron Freitas emphasized the broader consequences.
“Workers’ compensation fraud is not a victimless crime. It leads to higher costs for local businesses and everyday goods,” he stated. “Our ongoing fraud outreach campaign is sending a message: we will hold perpetrators accountable. San Joaquin County will not tolerate this kind of fraud.”
A Broader Campaign to Protect Workers and Employers
This case is part of a larger anti-fraud initiative launched by the San Joaquin County DA Office. It involves criminal prosecutions, public outreach, and cross-agency collaboration to deter abuse and strengthen the integrity of California’s workers’ comp system.
