Throughout the day, guest speakers and CWCI staff will examine the current state of the California economy, review recent and upcoming CWCI research, and explore legal, political, and industry challenges and opportunities.

Session Highlights

Session 1: Economic and Medical Inflation Updates

Sarah Bohn, PhD, Vice President of Research and Senior Fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California, will start the meeting with an update on the California economy. Then, CWCI Vice President of Research Eva Davinia Loaeza Albino, PhD, will preview Part II of the Institute’s research series on the impact of medical inflation on California workers’ compensation.

Session 2: Research and Medical Evaluation Challenges

CWCI President Alex Swedlow will present findings from recent research and outline the research agenda for 2025. He will be joined by Kurt T. Hegmann, MD, MPH, Director of the University of Utah’s Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health and Editor-In-Chief of the ACOEM Practice Guidelines. They will discuss the complexities of evaluating medical interventions without substantial medical evidence.

Session 3: Legal and Political Landscape

CWCI General Counsel and Senior Vice-President of Claims Sara Widener-Brightwell, along with Chief Operating Officer Gideon Baum, will cover the legal issues expected in the courts in the coming year. They will also analyze the 2025 workers’ compensation political landscape. The session will end with a panel discussion featuring legislative insiders.

Meeting Details

CWCI’s 61st Annual Meeting is free for CWCI member company employees, CWCI Emeritus, regulators, and the press. For all other attendees, the registration fee is $399. The day will start with a Continental breakfast at 7:45 a.m., and a luncheon will be provided from noon to 1:15 p.m. All participants must pre-register to attend.
